The Breakfast Club: The Musical (Show Poster)

Before

Fred Cheng, Writer and Director of 2018’s The Breakfast Club: The Musical at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, contacted me with a simple request: He wanted to recreate the movie poster from John Hughes’ 1985 hit, The Breakfast Club.

I don’t typically offer my services as a photographer, because I’m not very good with lighting. But I love a good challenge! I was excited to bring it together.

During

The cast was using a college lecture room for their rehearsal space. So since they were all in the same place at the same time, we dedicated a partial rehearsal to taking the cast photo. I brought my DSLR, but the lighting just…wasn’t…good.

The upside to the lighting issue is that we knew the image would be edited to look like an old movie, so we figured the low quality would actually help in this situation! (That may or may not have been the reason I agreed to take the picture in the first place!)

Oddly enough: the troubles ended there! Cutting out backgrounds in Photoshop is simple. Matching colors and fonts is simple. A few quick color corrections, some simple formatting, and the poster was done!

After

I saw the show and really enjoyed it! The cast put on a touching tribute to the ’80s, while also throwing in some modern twists. And it looks like Fred was happy too, because he gave a 5-star Review! Awe! Thank you, Fred!
